From Football Club Owner to Prime Minister – Remembering the Life of Silvio Berlusconi

Silvio Berlusconi, the long-time owner of AC Milan and former Italy Prime Minister died on Monday at the age of 86. Berlusconi bought AC Milan in 1986 and led the club to unprecedented levels of success, winning 29 trophies including five Champions League titles, eight Serie A titles, five European Cups and the Coppa Italia. This astonishingly successful period has been fondly remembered by fans for generations and will remain an important part of the history of Italian football.

Berlusconi’s involvement with AC Milan spanned decades. Not only did he guide the club to numerous championships but he was also instrumental in helping it become a global brand. He was known for marketing campaigns that increased the visibility of AC Milan across Europe and beyond, leading to rapid expansion of its fan base. Berlusconi was also responsible for bringing some of football’s most iconic players to AC Milan including Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf and Andriy Shevchenko. His commitment to signing world-class talent helped propel AC Milan to new heights.

In 2017, after 30 years as owner, Berlusconi sold his stake in AC Milan to Chinese investment group Sino-Europe Sports Investment Management Changxing Co Ltd (SES). However, following this move he continued his involvement with Italian football by buying Monza FC in 2018 and guiding them from Serie C up to Serie A. As recently as last month Berlusconi had announced plans for a new stadium at Monza which would be ready for use by teams playing in the 2023/24 season.

The legacy that Silvio Berlusconi leaves behind will not soon be forgotten – not only did he bring unprecedented success to AC Milan but he also showed commitment and dedication to helping other clubs such as Monza reach their full potential too. Fans can look forward with excitement as they anticipate what 2023/24 will bring – seeing their team wearing updated jerseys designed for the 2023/24 season featuring classic colours representing this remarkable man’s contribution to Italian football over many decades.
