Houssem Aouar has completed a dream move to Serie A giants AS Roma after signing a five-year deal on Sunday. The 24-year-old joins the Giallorossi from Lyon, leaving the Ligue 1 side as a free agent.
The Algeria international arrives with plenty of reputation, having been linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs over the past couple of years. He is one of the most sought after midfielders in France, known for his technical skills and ball control, which have made him a fan favourite at Lyon since 2017 when he was promoted from their academy.
“I think it’s the right project for me, with a big team, quality players and a unique fanbase,” said Aouar after signing with Roma. “I’m now a Giallorossi player and I’m ready to go.” Before joining Roma he had played only one game for France – a friendly against Ukraine in 2020 – before switching allegiance to Algeria, where his parents were born.
Aouar will join an impressive roster at Stadio Olimpico that includes names such as Gonzalo Villar, Carles Perez and Chris Smalling. He could be wearing AS Roma jerseys during the 2023/24 campaign should he remain at the club beyond his current contract. Under Jose Mourinho’s guidance, Aouar will be expected to take on more responsibility in Rome and help build upon an impressive start to 2023-24 season that has seen them compete for top four finish in Serie A again this season.
This move to Roma marks another important stage in Houssem Aouar’s career development. Already an established star in Ligue 1, he will now have chance to showcase his talents on European football’s biggest stage and help propel Roma towards greater success over next few years. His attacking prowess combined with defensive awareness makes him perfect fit for Mourinho’s tactical style of play and should allow the Giallorossi to end their long wait for league title glory sooner rather than later.
